To analyze the role of the media in the ‘invention’ of Australia, it is also necessary to have a good understanding of the national history of a medium, like the development of the Australian cinema: To look at both the films and the industry that produced those films, and how they were received by the national audience as well as overseas.

An excellent resource on Australian cinema is OzFilm: A subsection of the Reading Room of the Centre for Research in Culture & Communication, Murdoch University, Perth. The Reading Room features links, publications, essays, an extensive bibliography on Australian cinema and a detailed OzFilm database, that includes further links and references on every movie in the database. The Reading Room has been discontinued after 2003, but especially to get an historical overview and further references (both internet and print) it is a very valuable starting point.

The writings section features essays, reviews and dissertations on Australian film, and several of them also comment on the relation between national cinema and identity, for example “The Politics of Representation: An Analysis of the Australian Film Revival“.

The Reading Room also has other elaborate sub-sections about Australian radio, television, documentary and photography, which make it a worthwhile source for any research on Australian media and identity.
